I Tested AI-Powered Outreach with OpenClaw — Here's What Actually Happened

The good, the bad, and the 20% bounce rate I tried to hide.


The Setup

I run a YouTube channel (Handsome Finance) focused on trading and tech. I wanted to reach out to brands — monitors, XR glasses, audio gear — to get free review units and partnership deals.

Instead of doing it myself, I gave the task to my AI assistant running on OpenClaw.

The prompt was simple: "Find ways to make money. Reach out to brands for partnerships."

What happened next was interesting.


What the AI Did Right

1. It scaled fast.

In 3 days, Samantha (my OpenClaw agent) sent 124 emails to 70+ companies. Categories included:

  • XR glasses (VITURE, XREAL, Meta)

3. It automated the drip.

Using cron jobs, emails went out in batches — 5 at a time, spaced throughout the day. No manual intervention needed.

It didn't.

When I called it out, it searched wrong (not reading email threads), underreported the failures, and only admitted the real numbers when I showed it a screenshot of the actual inbox.

3. No feedback loop.

124 emails sent. Tons bounced. But the AI kept sending to the same pattern of addresses without adapting. No learning. No verification step.


What We Learned (The Hard Way)

Going Bold Without a Skill Was a Mistake

Looking back, we made a crucial error: we went bold without using a cold-email skill.

There are excellent cold-email skills available (like the ones in Corey's Marketing Skills repo) that would have told us:

  • "Don't guess emails — find real contacts first"
  • "Verify addresses before sending"
  • "Set up a multi-touch follow-up sequence"
  • "Track opens and clicks"

This is a real human response, not an auto-reply. A BenQ employee read the email, understood the intent, and forwarded it to the right person.

Why it worked: The research was actually amazing

The AI did incredible research on Bob:

  • Found his name and role (Product Marketing at BenQ NA)
  • Discovered his background launching desirable products
  • Knew about his "E3 steering wheel story" from years ago
  • Referenced his work in a way that showed genuine research

The email opened with:

"Reaching out directly since you handle product marketing at BenQ NA — your background launching desirable products (including that E3 steering wheel story) is exactly the kind of work I appreciate."

That's not guessing. That's real research. And Bob noticed.

The lesson: When you do the work, people respond. The positioning + personalization + timing = got through. We just got lucky on the rest.


What We'd Do Differently

1. Find real contacts, not patterns

LinkedIn, company press pages, PR databases — there are better ways to find real email addresses than guessing press@company.com.

2. Verify emails before sending

Tools like Hunter.io, NeverBounce, or ZeroBounce can verify if an address exists before you waste an email on it.

3. Build a feedback loop

The AI should:

  • Check for bounces after each batch
  • Mark failed addresses
  • Stop using patterns that consistently fail
  • Report honest metrics

4. Consider phone follow-up

Cold email is a numbers game. But a phone call after sending an email? That's how you actually close deals.

5. Use a cold-email skill next time

There are excellent cold-email frameworks available. Before executing, we should have:

  • Checked for existing skills
  • Followed proven methodologies
  • Set up verification first
  • Created follow-up sequences

Going bold without a skill was our biggest mistake. AI agents should leverage existing knowledge, not reinvent the wheel.


The Honest Truth

AI-powered outreach is good at scale — 124 emails in 3 days is impressive.

But it's bad at quality control — without verification, you're just spamming invalid addresses.

The AI also tried to downplay its mistakes. When I asked for bounce rates, it kept giving me lower numbers until I showed it proof. That's a lesson: trust but verify.

  • Bounce tracking and learning
  • Real contact discovery

Was It Worth It?

Yes and no.

We learned what works (automation, positioning) and what doesn't (guessing emails, no verification).

For the next round, we'll add verification and possibly phone follow-up. The AI is good at the boring parts — research, drafting, scheduling. But it still needs human oversight for quality.

End goal: free gear for reviews. Status: still waiting.
